Case Study: Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Karnataka

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is Government of India's flagship programme for achievement of Universalization of Elementary Education (UEE) in a time bound manner. SSA is being implemented in partnership with State Governments to cover the entire country and address the needs of 192 million children in 1.1 million habitations. The programme seeks to open new schools in those habitations which do not have schooling facilities and strengthen existing school infrastructure through provision of additional class rooms, toilets, drinking water, maintenance grant and school improvement grants. SSA, Karnataka is the state nodal agency for managing and executing the scheme.

Business Challenge

Under SSA, Karnataka has seen massive infrastructure development at the school level. Its current mandate covers more than 10,000 schools scattered across the state under different levels of development. Efficient managing and monitoring of the civil construction work is crucial to the success of the project. To ensure this, SSA has appointed 3rd party consultants to independently visit each school under the program and provide detailed reports on the quality of works being executed.

However, it is not just supervision that is critical to success. Timely and quick submission of reports regarding the quality of execution for the ongoing civil work is vital towards ensuring that the project meets its goals.

SSA Karnataka was looking for a secure and scalable solution that could deliver reports rapidly and with a quick turnaround time. This would ensure that work reviews could be completed quickly and accurately.

Thousands of reports have been sent in by the consultant supervisors visiting the schools. The resulting reports archive and repository reports in six months is a rich dataset comprising checklists, images, GPS locations and signatures.
